The Issue: Youngstown State University’s new $12.3 million indoor practice facility, the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS), was constructed for varsity athletic team practices, intramural sports, campus-wide activities and special events. To accommodate these many uses, the state-of-the-art facility required a high-performance synthetic turf system.
In addition, after eight years of heavy use, YSU needed to replace the synthetic turf on Beede Field at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins turned to Sports Construction Group for both of these projects.
The Job: First, SCG crews installed a Shaw Sportexe PowerBlade HP+ synthetic turf system at WATTS. This system was a perfect selection, since it combines the appearance of natural grass with the engineered performance of modern synthetic turf. It is specially designed to enhance player speed and performance while providing for maximum player safety.
Since YSU Athletic Director Ron Strollo was so impressed with the quality of work completed at WATTS, he trusted SCG to install an “immaculate field” at Stambaugh Stadium. SCG quickly began the turf replacement at Beede Field, once again installing a PowerBlade HP+ synthetic turf system. |

The Results: Both projects were completed on budget and in time for the Penguins to kick off their football practices as scheduled, putting them on firm footing as they head towards another championship season.
“Nobody builds quality athletic fields like Sports Construction Group. Their experience at the pro, collegiate and high school levels is unparalleled,” said Strollo. “We saw this first hand with their work on our new Watson and Tressel Training Site. It made SCG the obvious choice for the field construction at Stambaugh Stadium.” |
